March 15, 2012 - Deaf Jam: a Film by Judy Lieff
In Deaf Jam, Aneta Brodski seizes the day. She is a Deaf teen introduced to American Sign Language (ASL) Poetry, who then boldy enters the spoken word slam scene. In a wondrous twist, Aneta, an Israeli immigrant living in the Queens section of New York City, eventually meets Tahani, a hearing Palestinian slam poet. The two young women embark on a hearing/deaf collaboration, a performance duet that is a metaphor for the complex realities they share.
The film begins at 6 pm. It is free and open to the public.
Donations to the Friends of Lorine Niedecker will be gratefully accepted.

March 17, 2012 - Geology of Mining in WI
Mining is big news in Wisconsin these days. From iron mining in the north to the new sand mines in the central part of the state, conflicts are beginning to arise and new laws are on the table. What kind of minerals does Wisconsin have and where are they located? What processes are used for extraction? Why are mining companies returning to Wisconsin at this time?
Join us on Saturday, March 17 at 1 pm for a presentation on the Geology of Mining in Wisconsin. Our presenter will be Dr. Prajukti Bhattacharyya of UW-Whitewater. She is an associate professor in the Department of Geography and Geology, with a background in "Hard Rock Geology" and Geoscience Education. She teaches courses on volcanoes, mountain building, rocks and minerals, plate tectonics, and environmental geology.
This program is free and open to the public.
