Prepare for the Knickerbocker Ice Festival in Lake Mills (February 3 & 4) by participating in the Ice Carving Demo on Sunday, January 29 at Tyranena Brewing Company. From 1pm-4pm, see how the ice carvers make those fabulous sculptures, and try it yourself!

Have you ever wondered how all of the extraordinary ice sculptures enjoyed during the Lake Mills' Knickerbocker weekend are created? Each year at the the Knickerbocker Ice Festival, the community is thrilled to watch the ice carvers take a block of frozen water and turn it into a fantastical shape. It doesn't look easy to do - but it sure is fun to watch!

Dick Emmerich will perform a demonstration the Sunday before the big festival begins at the Tyranena Brewery Beer Garden as a kick-off for the festival.

Hollywood's David Zucker Will Direct Wisconsin's 2012 Winter TV Commercial

The Wisconsin Department of Tourism recently announced some pretty exciting news: Hollywood producer (and native son) David Zucker will be directing a Winter 2012 Wisconsin Tourism TV commercial.

The campaign revolves around "having fun in Wisconsin." And Zucker certainly knows how to create fun. He's had his name attached as writer, director and producer on some of the most hysterical and successful comedy films in the last three decades: "Airplane," "The Naked Gun" series, "Ruthless People" and the last two installments of "Scary Movie."

The commercial will highlight both indoor and outdoor winter fun in Wisconsin. Currently in production, it will begin airing the week of January 9, 2012 in various Midwest TV markets. We "Shirley" hope to see some of Jefferson County in that commercial!

Have you ever noticed how much Wisconsin looks like the shape of a mitten? And, come to think of it, our neighboring state Michigan/Upper Michigan?

The Wisconsin Department of Tourism invites you to visit a Travel Wisconsin Welcome Center (listed below) or participating Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce or CVB (Convention and Visitors Bureau) during regular business hours through January 15, 2012, to donate new or gently used mittens. The mittens will then be donated to local charities.

Participating mitten drop-off sites include these Welcome Centers/Rest Stops:

If you're already counting the days until the Lake Mills Farmers' Market opens up in May of 2012, never fear - we have just the event to tide you over!

Some of our favorite Lake Mills Farmers' Market vendors will gather on Saturday, December 10 for the First Annual Winter Market. The hallways and Community Room of the Lake Mills City Hall will be bursting with food products, jewelry, scarves, rugs and other crafts. You'll be able to stock up on kettle corn, fudge, and honey. The 2011 Waterloo Holiday Parade will be held on Dec. 3rd, 2011 at 4:30pm. The Parade will start out at Piggly Wiggly in Waterloo and head South on Monroe St. At the 4-corners, the Parade will take a right turn and end at F&M Bank. Immediately following the Parade a "Greet & Treat" will be held at the VFW building, located on South Monroe St. We will be serving cookies and warm beverages, free of charge. The trophies for first, second and third place in 3 categories: floats, vehicles and marchers/bands will be awarded. Santa will be anxiously waiting to meet all the little boys and girls and can't wait to have his picture taken with them-also free of charge. A showcase of nearly all of the Department's ensembles and small groups - this concert benefits the music student scholarship fund. Vetro Winery Plans Grand Opening in Jefferson!

Vetro Winery is officially open in their new location on the grounds of St. Coletta. The new 6,000 square foot facility is a cornerstone location for Sanctuary Ridge, and will house the tasting and retail room as well as the production facility for the wines, although the grapes will still be grown in the original vineyards in Concord, WI.

Vetro plans a Grand Opening WEEK from November 12-19, which will include tours, tastings, pairings with chocolates and Wisconsin cheeses, and the release of Lil' Sassy Strawberry, a chocolate strawberry wine.

Busy Barns Adventure Farms in Fort Atkinson has had a very busy October. Over 10 race cars from the Jefferson County Speedway were on display early this month, and children and their families were able to meet the drivers, sit in the cars and view their special racing outfits.

Not to be outdone by fast cars, the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile made a surprise visit to Busy Barns as well!

So - with less than two weeks left in October - what else will be happening at Busy Barns Adventure Farms? Be sure to pay them a visit this weekend or next - you never know what excitement you'll find at the Farm!

Calling all poets, poetry lovers, writers, English teachers, educators, and wordsmiths. The 3rd Annual Lorine Niedecker Wisconsin Poetry Festival offers you a weekend full of workshops, speakers, open poetry readings, round tables, landmark tours, and the infamous writers cafe. The festival is in honor of local Fort Atkinson poet Lorine Niedecker (1903-1970), a twentieth-century, second-wave, Modern American poet often identified with the Objectivists. Living most of her life on the shores of the Rock River near Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, she is perhaps best known as a poet of place who wrote about the Blackhawk Island that she loved.

Registrations are available online. You may also register the day of for the entire weekend or daily.

Social events, informal gatherings and workshops will begin Friday evening and carry on through Sunday afternoon.

On a picturesque Wisconsin Fall Saturday, more than 650 mountain bicyclists assembled on the John Muir Trails in the Southern Kettle Moraine State Forest to participate in the Annual Fall Color Festival sponsored by Trek, Wheel and Sprocket, and the LaGrange General Store/Backyard Bike Shop. The event raises money for the ever-popular John Muir trails and is hosted by WORBA. The Southern Kettle Moraine Forest DNR receives all of the proceeds after expenses for maintenance on the mountain bike trails.

RACE DETAILS

»PADDLE:

Start the race with a paddle on the Rock River beginning at Tivoli Island. This first three mile leg will take you through Watertown on the water. Make sure you check out the three large city parks and businesses along the paddle. Also, make sure you read the river properly. Go too far out of the channel and you will add significant distance and time to your race. Cut a corner too sharp, you may have to push pole. Just above the dam, exit the water, river left, and carry your gear 75 yards. Re-enter the water below the dam and paddle to the boat launch next to Bethesda Lutheran Communities - about a mile. Did you notice the historic bridges? How about the geese?

»BIKE: This is a challenging but still a reasonable 13.5 mile route. Some hills and some flats, sure to please every level rider. You may notice how quickly you get into the country, another small town treat. The rolling glacial terrain of Jefferson County offers remarkable views on this route. Was that the same goose flying overhead that you saw during your paddle?

»RUN: Now begin your three mile trail run. Certainly not as hilly as the bike ride but equally as challenging. Take notice of Bethesda's grounds...you're helping support them right now! The wooded portion - Camp Matz - offers the chance to observe deer, squirrels or other wildlife. Get to the edge of the woods and look for the ducks, cranes and other nesting birds. Was that the same goose over your head?

»OBSTACLE: A short run with a twist. It is only a quarter mile but it contains a military style obstacle course complete with Drill Sergeants and a swing over a water trap. Lastly, grab your RockMan Challenge Burlap Bag, put both feet in and holding the bag above your knee line, get to the finish line. Congratulations, you just completed the RockMan Challenge!

64 Mile Figure 8:
The 64 mile riders riders can start anytime between 8:00 and 10:00am. We expect that the riders who are choosing this longer ride are experienced with longer rides and can plan their start time so that they are able to return to our tailgate party by 3:00pm. Please keep in mind that you must include your stop time when computing your average speed.

18 Mile and 35 Mile Rides:
For the 18 and 35 mile riders there will be a mass start at 10:30am. With this start time, we expect that very few riders will return before we are ready to serve lunch. A 35 mile rider who averages 8 or more miles an hour will return by 3:00pm. If a rider does not expect to average 8 miles an hour they can leave prior to 10:30am.

Road Markings:
Where possible, roads will be marked with paint markings (link to markers) with two marks before each turn and one mark after each turn. Where necessary, signs will warn riders of busy roads and stop signs at the bottom of a hill. Some townships do not allow road markings. Signs will be used in these areas.

August 06 - 08, 2011 - 2011 Cowalunga Bike Tour

Early every August, several hundred cyclists begin the three-day CowaLUNGa bike tour to help raise funds for the American Lung Association of Metropolitan Chicago (ALAMC). The tour begins at the Gurnee Mills Shopping Mall in Illinois and travels up into Wisconsin with overnight stops in William's Bay and Whitewater. Each day of the tour is about 60-70 miles of fun road cycling covering a total of 190 miles by the end of day three. This event is not a race but a well supported leisurely ride on safe, scenic roads with limited traffic. There are plenty of rest stops along the way as well as a choice of indoor or outdoor accommodations each night. Fundraising dollars help the ALAMC in their continued fight against lung disease.

On July 28th, 2011, Opportunities Inc. will celebrate its 45th Anniversary and will showcase the completion of its 6 million dollar agency reinvestment, ensuring the continued advancement of community and commercial services that provide training, employment and empowerment for individuals with disabilities and other life barriers throughout Southern Wisconsin. This will be an exciting evening to acknowledge the positive growth in the community's workforce due to Opportunities, Inc's innovative programs and business building initiatives. Recognition will be given to the community members served through the agency, as well as, the foremost private and public sector partnerships that have evolved over the past four decades.

The formal fundraiser will include a social hour beginning at 5:30pm, with Best Events Catering serving delectable refreshments at 6:00pm; outstanding musical entertainment by The Main Street Big Band; and an opportunity to experience the sights and sounds of the agency's mission, as the backdrop of the event will be the newly built 80,000 square feet training and production facility located at 100 East Cramer Street in Fort Atkinson.

Governor Scott Walker has been invited to deliver the key note address and Sports Director for FOX6 News, Tom Pipines, will be the Master of Ceremonies. A presentation is also planned for 7:00 pm, to celebrate the core values of the agency, which include; Commitment, Choice, Collaboration and Community.

With the present debate in the state of Wisconsin centering on several subjects relevant to Opportunities, Inc., such as job creation initiatives, Medicaid Funding, and clean energy; what a perfect time for this event to transpire, and unite the community in celebration for the special citizens that have been empowered by its mission for 45 years!

The relaxed atmosphere will surely entice relationship building for those who have differing backgrounds and political viewpoints and foster an awareness of the myriad of programs available for individuals with disabilities and other life barriers; emphasizing the positive outcomes that are revealed every day at the agency. Furthermore, education and enlightenment will flourish among guests as open dialogue and social networking are cultivated throughout the evening. The 3rd Annual Downtown Arts Walk will be host to over 50 artists and artisans. You'll find unique locally handcrafted textiles like woven wool rugs, silver jewelry, ceramic vases & kitchenware, mosaic tiles, felted clothing and beaded earrings and necklaces. In addition, fine artists will be showing traditional watercolor painting, modern oil painting, nature photography and outdoor sculpture. A handful of artists will be giving demonstrations in wood carving, painting, welding, pottery and weaving. Plus there will be plenty to do for the entire family.

Kids can enjoy free arts & crafts projects at the Kids Creativity Tent as well as a romp in the Bouncy House. Everyone will enjoy live music and there will be over 30 local food producers at the Fort Farmers Market.

Sponsored by the Fort Arts Council, this event is in conjunction with the Fort Chamber of Commerce Annual Carnival Days and the Fort Farmers' Market. On Saturday July 9, hundreds of motorcycles will RIDE TO CURE Diabetes to their host city of Fort Atkinson. The group of 700-1000 riders will spend 1 1/2 hours in downtown Fort, enjoying shopping, food & beverages, before their return to Madison. Thunder Run is their annual benefit to find a cure for diabetes. Meeting this year's goal of $100,000 will mark ONE MILLION dollars raised to Help Find a Cure. The 2011 Cousins Subs® Moo Tour will visit the Jefferson County Fair on Saturday, July 9, in search of the loudest, proudest and most creative moo-ers to compete in August at Moo-la-palooza®, the world famous mooing contest at the Wisconsin State Fair. The Moo Team will hold auditions from 3-7pm on Main Street of the fairgrounds. There is no cost to moo; the contest is open to ages 5 and older and all entrants will receive either Cousins' gift cards, T-shirts or other fun prizes. Cousins Subs will donate $1 per moo to the Jefferson County 4-H Youth Group.

The best moo-ers - the cream of the crop - will be awarded golden cowbells and invitations to Moo-la-palooza, to be held Wednesday, August 10, at the Cousins Subs Amphitheater at the Wisconsin State Fair. July 1, 2011 - 4th of July Street Dance

The Palmyra Chamber of Commerce, together with the Palmyra American Legion Post 304, will join together on Friday evening, July 1st to provide an old fashioned family street dance, with live music and food, in downtown Palmyra from 7-11pm.

The village will close off Third Street from Main to Taft for this annual event. The Chamber will be selling burgers, brats, corn, hot dogs, beer and soda while the American Legion will be selling nachos, coffee, and water. The Lioness Club will offer popcorn for sale and the Palmyra Methodist Church Women will be selling brownies and ice cream. The food stands are scheduled to open at 6 p.m.

At 7 p.m. the band, "Echo Road" will begin playing a wide selection of 70's music including power rock, electric blues and funky jazz. Bring your friends and relatives and enjoy a fun-filled evening of singing, dancing and eating.
